This organization shall provide an opportunity for older adults to share in the exploration of topics of mutual interest, to contribute their experience and their expertise, and to expand their circle of friends. (SSI Constitution, Article II)
We are more than 300 Portland OR seniors, dedicated to learning—about everything. We present forty classes per quarter, three quarters of the year, plus poetry reading, play reading, current events discussions, and social events at eight sites in the Portland metro area. We are self-funded and staffed entirely by volunteers.
SSI was founded in 1991 by Neal Naigus of Portland Community College and a group of seniors dedicated to lifelong learning. We are still affiliated with PCC and have since grown to more than 300 members.
We have long had traditional classes—presenters facing students in classrooms—and added DVD classes in 2014. Our class presenters range from our own members, who research topics themselves, to others in the community who have special knowledge in many different fields.
